Nyepi 2027 and your honeymoon

For one day a year Bali switches off. No flights, no traffic, no lights in the street. If your honeymoon touches 9 March 2027, plan around it, or plan for it.

Nyepi is the Balinese Hindu new year, the Day of Silence. For 24 hours the island stops: no work, no travel, no entertainment, and as little light as possible. The rules apply to visitors as well as to Balinese families, and the airport closes.

Here are the 2027 date (and the 2026 one for reference), what the day looks like from a hotel, the ogoh-ogoh parades the night before, and how to place flights and tours around it.

The quick answer

Nyepi 2027 falls on Tuesday 9 March 2027; in 2026 it fell on 19 March. The silence runs from 6 am to 6 am the next day. Ngurah Rai airport closes for those 24 hours, and visitors must stay inside their hotel grounds. The evening before (8 March 2027) brings the ogoh-ogoh parades and road closures. Do not land, leave or book a tour on Nyepi itself.

When is Nyepi in 2027?

Tuesday 9 March 2027, from 6 am to 6 am on Wednesday 10 March. In 2026 it was Thursday 19 March.

The date follows the Balinese Saka calendar, which is why it moves every year. Wikipedia's Nyepi page lists 19 March 2026 and 9 March 2027, and describes the silence as running from 6 am to 6 am the following day. Around it sit three other days that matter to a visitor.

Melasti, a purification procession to the sea, takes place three to four days before Nyepi at temples near the coast. Expect white-clad crowds on some beaches and slow roads nearby. The day after Nyepi, Ngembak Geni, is for visiting family and asking forgiveness; fire, power and social life return.

What happens on the Day of Silence?

Four rules: no fire or light, no work, no travel, no entertainment. Visitors stay inside their hotel, where they can move around the grounds.

The four rules are called the amati: amati geni (no fire or light, including electricity), amati karya (no work), amati lelunganan (no travel) and amati lelanguan (no revelry). Village guards, the pecalang, patrol the streets.

For a couple in a hotel, the day is quiet rather than hard. According to Wikipedia, visitors may do as they like inside their hotel, but no one may go onto the beaches or streets, and rule-breakers risk deportation or prosecution. Smartraveller adds that shops, restaurants and tourist sites close, and asks visitors to keep lights off and noise low. Hotels keep serving their guests, usually with curtains drawn after dark. Ask yours what it runs that day.

Is Bali airport closed on Nyepi?

Yes. Ngurah Rai suspends all flights for 24 hours, from 6 am on Nyepi to 6 am the next day. Ferries and the main bus terminal stop too.

In 2026 the closure ran from 06:00 WITA on Thursday 19 March to 06:00 on Friday 20 March under a NOTAM, and Metro TV counted 440 scheduled flights affected. The last international departure left at 01:30 on the Thursday morning, and the first international flight after the silence was planned for 08:15 on the Friday.

Sea links close as well. RRI reported the Ketapang to Gilimanuk ferry halted from the afternoon before Nyepi, and the Padang Bai to Lembar crossing and the Mengwi bus terminal suspended for the day. Transit passengers stay inside the airport (Smartraveller). Expect the same pattern on 9 March 2027. The exact 2027 NOTAM and last-flight times are published closer to the date, so check with your airline in February.

What are the ogoh-ogoh parades the evening before?

Giant demon figures of bamboo and papier-mache, carried through every village at dusk on Pengerupukan, then often burned. Roads close for them.

The ogoh-ogoh represent negative forces and figures from Hindu mythology. Each banjar, the village ward, builds its own, then carry them on bamboo platforms through the streets, spinning them at crossroads to confuse evil spirits. At home, families bang pots and bamboo and light coconut-leaf torches to drive the demons out (Wikipedia).

It is loud, crowded and joyful, the opposite of the next day. Watch it in your own village or the nearest town rather than driving across the island: roads close as the parades start, and you need to be back at the hotel before the silence begins at 6 am. We would skip any tour or transfer on that evening and be in place by mid-afternoon.

How does Nyepi affect flights and tours booked around it?

Avoid landing or leaving between the evening of 8 March and the morning of 10 March 2027. Book tours from 6 March or from 11 March.

Airlines do not fly into a closed airport, so the risk is less a cancelled flight than a rushed one. A late arrival on 8 March means a transfer through parade traffic. A departure on 10 March means a morning that starts with the whole island leaving the house. Give yourself a buffer day on each side.

Tours follow the same logic. No tours run on Nyepi itself, and evening tours on the eve run into road closures. Every listing on this site has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which helps if a date shifts. The Uluwatu sunset and kecak evening is a good one to place before the silence: about six hours, a private car, the 6 pm kecak on the cliff. The listing warns that religious events can close roads, so confirm the plan with the provider for any date in Nyepi week.

Can a honeymoon over Nyepi be special?

Yes, if you pick the right hotel. A day with no traffic, no noise and no light pollution is rare anywhere, and the stars over a dark island are the reward.

Think of it as a forced day off. No transfers, no tour pickups, no deciding. A villa with a private pool and a kitchen or in-villa dining becomes the best room on the island for 24 hours. A big beach resort works too; check what its restaurant serves on the day and whether the spa runs.

At night, look up. With street lights and house lights off across Bali, the sky is darker than on any other night of the year. Pick a hotel with an open terrace or garden and stay up for it.

Then use the days after. The riverside spa for two near Ubud or the koi boat at Kamandalu make a gentle restart on 10 or 11 March. Our best time for a Bali honeymoon guide places March in the year, and the rainy season post covers the weather that often comes with it.

A couple's room by the river: massage, scrub and, on the three-hour option, a flower bath. A soft landing after the Day of Silence.
