Where to stay in Bali as a couple

Where you sleep in Bali decides how long you spend in a car. Pick the right two bases and the island feels small; pick the wrong one and every day out starts with a long ride.

Bali is one island, but its areas feel like different countries. Ubud is jungle, rice fields and temples. The Bukit peninsula in the south is limestone cliffs and surf beaches. Seminyak is restaurants and beach clubs. Sanur is calm water and sunrise. Sidemen and Amed, in the east, are quiet and far from everything.

We do not list hotels or their prices here. What follows is how each area fits a honeymoon, and which of the days out on this site pick you up there.

The quick answer

For a honeymoon, split your stay: three or four nights in Ubud or the Ayung valley at Sayan for jungle, temples and the spa, then the coast. Choose the Bukit (Uluwatu) for clifftop sunsets, Jimbaran or Nusa Dua for calm water and an easy airport run, Sanur for the Penida boats, Seminyak for nightlife. Sidemen and Amed are lovely but far from most pickups.

Where is the best place to stay in Bali for a honeymoon?

Ubud plus one coastal area. Most couples spend three or four nights inland and the rest on the Bukit, in Jimbaran or in Nusa Dua.

The split works because the days out split the same way. The waterfalls, the water temple, the fireflies, the koi boat, the spa and the Batur sunrise are all closer to Ubud. The manta boat, the Uluwatu sunset and the dinner cruise all start in the south. Sleep near what you are doing.

Is Ubud a good base for a honeymoon?

Yes, for three or four nights. It is the cultural heart of Bali and the closest base to most of the romantic days out.

Ubud has no beach, and the town centre is busy. The romance is just outside it: villas above river gorges, rice fields at the end of a lane, the Campuhan ridge walk at dawn. The Sayan area, on the Ayung river valley west of the centre, is where many of the villas with jungle views sit.

Nearby are the Tegallalang terraces, the Tirta Empul water temple and the waterfalls of the private Ubud day, plus the koi boat at Kamandalu and the riverside spa near Bali Zoo. Ubud also sits on the way to Kintamani, which makes it the right base for the Batur sunrise jeep.

Uluwatu or Jimbaran: which is better for a honeymoon?

Uluwatu for drama and sunsets from your own cliff, Jimbaran for a calmer beach, seafood on the sand and a short ride to the airport.

The Bukit peninsula is the limestone tip of southern Bali. Uluwatu sits at its western edge, with villas on top of the cliffs and small beaches like Padang Padang and Bingin down steep steps. Sunsets face you across the ocean. It is far from Ubud: plan on two hours by car or more in traffic.

Jimbaran sits on a sheltered bay on the north side of the Bukit. Fishing boats pull up on the sand, and at dusk the beach fills with tables for grilled seafood. It is close to the airport and handy for the Uluwatu sunset evening, which can end with dinner at Jimbaran (paid separately, the listing says).

Is Nusa Dua good for a honeymoon?

Yes, if you want a calm beach and a big resort that runs everything. It is less good if you want to walk out to local warungs.

Nusa Dua is a planned resort area on the east side of the Bukit, behind gates, with long lawns, calm water inside the reef and large hotels side by side. It is quiet, clean and easy, and a short ride from both the airport and Benoa Harbour, where the romantic dinner cruise starts.

The trade-off is that it feels separate from the island. Pair it with three or four nights in Ubud and you get both sides. Ashlee, from New Zealand, on the cruise: "The food was amazing! They accommodated for my allergy very easily. Staff were very attentive and friendly".

From a Nusa Dua or Jimbaran base, Benoa is close: a lit catamaran, five courses and a live acoustic band, seven couples at most.

What about Seminyak and Sanur?

Seminyak for restaurants and nights out, Sanur for calm water, sunrise and the boats to Nusa Penida.

Seminyak, on the west coast north of Kuta, is the place for dinner reservations, cocktail bars and beach clubs at sunset. Canggu, further north, is younger and full of cafes and surfers. Both have heavy traffic, and their beaches are busy.

Sanur is the opposite: an older resort town on the east coast, with a long beachfront path, a reef that keeps the water calm and the sun rising over the sea. The fast boats to Nusa Penida leave from its beach, and the manta day meets at a restaurant there. If Penida is the day you care about most, Sanur makes the morning short.

Are Sidemen and Amed worth it for a honeymoon?

As a third base on a trip of ten nights or more, yes. As your only base, no: they are far from the airport and most pickups.

Sidemen is a valley in East Bali with rice terraces, weaving villages and views of Mount Agung, the island's highest volcano. There is not much to do, which is the point. Amed is a string of black-sand fishing villages on the far east coast, with outrigger boats on the beach and snorkelling straight from the shore.

Few days out reach them. The Batur listing names Amed among its surcharge areas, and the other tours here pick up in the south or around Ubud. Go to the east for two nights of quiet, with a private car and driver for the transfer and stops on the way.

Which tours pick up where?

Most pick up in the south and around Ubud. Check each listing's pickup zone before you choose your villa.

Villa or resort for a honeymoon in Bali?

A villa with its own pool for the Ubud nights, either for the coast. Privacy is what you are paying for.

Bali's private pool villas are the island's honeymoon signature: a walled garden, a pool for two and breakfast that arrives on a floating tray if you ask. They suit Ubud, where the setting is the jungle. On the coast, a resort with a beach, a spa and restaurants on site can be easier, especially in Nusa Dua.

Check three things before you book: how far the villa is from the main road (traffic noise carries), whether the pool gets sun, and how long the drive is to the days out you want. Mixing styles works well: a villa in Sayan, a resort in Jimbaran. The itinerary guide shows how to split the nights.
